Four rooms closed in Halbeck this year

None of the four announced it, and that is the part worth noticing. No closing night, no final show, no post.

Three of them still have a website up taking bookings. We went and stood outside all four, which took an afternoon and told us more than an afternoon should have.

None of the four was a headline closure. There was no campaign, no petition, and in three of the four cases no announcement — a venue stops taking bookings, then stops answering, and about four months later somebody notices that the last show was in February.

The Lantern Rooms (180) closed in August after nineteen years, and is the only one of the four that closed loudly, with a final night and a queue down Ordell Street. The building has been sold and becomes eleven flats in the spring.

The Cellar at Pell Bridge (90) lost its licence in April following two noise complaints from a residential conversion completed in 2024. The conversion is eleven metres from a room that had been operating since 2008.

Gaunt's (140) lost its lease in January. The landlord did not renew; the unit is currently empty and has been marketed twice.

The Fold (220) stopped answering emails in March. Its last show was 8 February. Nobody we spoke to — including two promoters who had dates held there — was ever formally told it had closed.

Three of the four causes are property. That is the pattern across the whole seven-year decline and it is more useful than any account that starts with streaming or ticket prices: the rooms are not closing because nobody comes, they are closing because the buildings are worth more as something else.
